Leg Veins - FAQs

Who will benefit from varicose vein removal?

Both men and women suffer from varicose veins, although it is more common in women as a result of pregnancy. Generally people who are required to stand for prolonged period of time are susceptible to developing swollen veins. Many suffers complain of aching legs, fatigue and or unsightly protruding veins. They experience the leg as being heavy. Varicose veins that go untreated will normally deteriorate, causing further problems such as skin discolouring and possible leg ulcers. Unsightly leg veins do affect people’s confidence in wearing shorts or exposing there legs without stockings or tights. So if you have raised or blue veins that may or may not give rise to aching legs, then you are probably a good candidate for varicose vein removal. People should have their varicose veins treated as early as possible as the condition does not improve, but progressively worsens and becomes more of a problem to treat.

What are Varicose veins and what causes them?

Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close efficiently helping to pump blood around the body and back to the heart. After certain events in our lives, such as pregnancy, weight gain or heredity condition these valves can start to malfunction and no longer open and close. The result is that other valves in the leg need to work harder, resulting in higher pressure in the vein causing it to bulge and distort. This abnormal activity causes discomfort and dull aches in our legs. Damaged veins do not repair themselves and must be removed to encourage the blood to take other healthy veins to supply the heart. Failure to get varicose fails treated at an early stage will cause more problems in near future and will result in a poorer quality of life.

How can I check to see if I have Varicose veins?

If you can see a bulging or distorted blue leg veins clearly through your skin or experience a dull ache in the leg then these are a sign for you to have them viewed by a clinician and tested using ultrasound scanner. How is Varicose vein removal done?

With the development of new radio frequency technology called VNUS, varicose vein removal can be performed under local anaesthetic avoiding the need for a general anaesthetic and long recovery periods. Our Vascular surgeon makes an incision into the vein once the local anaesthetic is effective and then passes a fine probe into the vein. The vein is subjected to localised heat which implodes the vein section by section until the target vein collapses and no longer functions. In time the vein is broken down by the blood and passes through the body. More complex varicose veins that have been allowed to go untreated until they have serious distortion would probably be more suited to extraction or stripping using surgery. Stripping by surgery can also be performed by our Vascular surgeon however this requires a general anaesthetic. Our clinician at can advise at time of consultation which treatment is best suited for you.

How long will Varicose vein removal take?

The actual procedure using VNUS radio frequency takes no more than 20 minutes. Prior to the treatment ultrasonic assessments are produce to identify the weak valves in the veins and plan the treatment approach to be undertaken by the surgeon. Patients will normally be at the clinic for one hour from time of arrival to discharge. Patients are able to walk after the procedure and will generally be able to make their way home without any special provision.

What results can I expect from Varicose vein removal?

Patients having had Varicose vein removal using the VNUS radio frequency method can expect to have little or no discomfort on the following day. They will be able to see the vein is no longer protruding and those nagging aches should have disappeared. The leg will appear free from the varicose vein enabling you to wear shorts and skirts with confidence.

How long is the recovery period from Varicose vein removal?

With the VNUS radio frequency method recovery time is typically 48 hours. Patients leave the clinic with light bandaging and will have the minimum of bruising. This is a substantial improvement on the traditional varicose vein surgery which took weeks to make a full recovery.

What are the after effects of Varicose vein removal?

With VNUS patients experience light bruising around the incision area however this will subside in next 48 hours. There will be relatively little discomfort and patients will be able to go about their normal activities within one day after the procedure.

Are there risks associated with Varicose Vein removal?

As with all invasive procedures there is a risk of infection. However under the VNUS technique there is normally only one incision which is properly protected using our effective aftercare. This is a risk that the varicose vein may start to regenerate in which case a second procedure would be recommended. The VNUS technique has a success rate in over 95% of cases. As the VNUS procedure is performed under local anaethetic we avoid the risks associated with a general anaesthetic.

How much does Varicose vein cost?

The cost of a varicose vein removal will depend on the complexity of the vein and the method used to remove it. For example the price including ultrasound scans for the VNUS radio frequency technique would be £1,950. The price for a complex vein remove under general anesthetic would be around £3,500. Both prices quoted include follow up consultation with surgeon.
